Facilitator Bios:
My name is Sally (they/them). As the intern at The Hinterlands, I am currently balancing the internship/school/work life as a graduate student at a predominately white institution. I am a queer Chinese-American with lived experience both in navigating intersectional identities, and in navigating simultaneous life responsibilities. I bring a deep liberation and systems-focused lens to this group and are passionate about creating spaces for BIPOC voices.
I am Chaquita (she/her), a clinical therapist and a black disabled first-generation college graduate. On my college journey I attended a city college, a four-year undergraduate university, and a predominately white graduate school program. I have an understanding of what it means to navigate academic institutions as a first-generation student and a BIPOC individual. I understand the extent to which this experience can be socially and emotionally isolating, and the toll that this can take on mental health and interpersonal relationships. You might find yourself caught between academic responsibilities and family obligations. You may feel that your family doesn’t understand the significance of the choices and sacrifices that have to be made. I am hoping that this space provides support and community that gets it.
